In 1963, Ted began his study of Martial Arts at Tracy's Kenpo in San Jose, California.  He earned his first black belt in 1968, and his 8th degree black belt in 2001.  While continuing his study at Tracy's Kenpo, he earned the distinct title of Chief Instructor.   Some of the more notable students Ted has taught include Jay T. Will, who was inducted into the Black Belt Hall of Fame, and Ray Arquilla, World Police and Fire Champion.

In the early 1970s, Ted was a member of Tracy's National Fighting Team, once lead by the legendary Joe Lewis. Tracy's National Fighting Team was known for their aggressive fighting style, and their distinctive black and white checkered gi tops.

Ted served in the United States Armed Forces, and was a member of the San Jose Police Department.   While at the San Jose Police Department, Ted was an undercover Narcotics Agent, and a member of the Police MERGE/SWAT Team.
