Godan
(5th Degree Black Belt)

Starting the martial arts somewhat later in life has only deepened the appreciation for the martial arts, especially and more specifically for the Tracy System of Kenpo Karate, of which I am presently a Godan (5th degree black belt) awarded by Grand Master Al Tracy.

After fifteen years of teaching the art of dance, it was a logical transition to learning and teaching the martial arts.  The elements of conditioning, breathing, balance, timing and total dedication were already engrained, which transferred nicely into training in the martial arts.  Greg Mattson and myself teamed up years ago to create an atmosphere of learning and training at Self Defense Studio.

My special responsibility as Chief Instructor at Self Defense Studio throughout the years has been to pass on and keep intact the standardized System of Tracy’s Kenpo through the techniques and katas to our students in Illinois in the Chicago area.  Some of the avenues I’ve used to display and feature the Tracy System techniques and katas are tournament participation, formation of a Demonstration Team which has performed at numerous functions, and articles written for Art of the Warrior Magazine and Action Martial Arts Magazine.  However, most importantly is the actual studio instruction where the heart of the art lies.
